Paid Surveys That Pay in Amazon Gift Cards: Worth It?

How surveys that pay in Amazon gift cards work, how they differ from cashing out to PayPal, and how to avoid gift card scams.

The Zona Encuestas team 5 min read

Many survey panels let you choose how to cash out your balance: money to PayPal or a gift card, most often from Amazon. They look like the same thing, since either way you trade your balance for something, but it matters which one you pick.

The short answer: an Amazon gift card is worth it if you were going to shop there anyway and the card is for the Amazon store in your country; otherwise, cash to PayPal is more flexible. And one rule that always holds: no serious panel asks you to buy gift cards in order to get paid. Below is how each option works and when to pick one or the other.

How cashing out with a gift card works

You take surveys and build up a balance, same as always. When you want to cash out, instead of requesting money to PayPal you choose a gift card. The panel emails you a code or leaves it in your account, and you redeem it at the store to spend it.

What matters is understanding what that code is: it isn’t money, it’s credit for one specific store. It only works for buying there and, in general, you can’t move it to your bank account or swap it for cash.

On Zona Encuestas, Amazon and local store gift cards are redeemed from the same balance as cash to PayPal, depending on where you live. What’s available shows up in your account when you cash out.

Amazon gift card or PayPal: the differences

If you choose PayPal, how the money then gets to your bank is covered in how to cash out survey earnings: PayPal, bank transfers and fees.

The detail most people miss: which country’s store

Amazon isn’t one store: it has separate sites by country, and a gift card usually works only on the site where it was issued. A card from Amazon’s U.S. store (amazon.com) can’t be spent on Amazon’s store in another country, and the other way around.

For you, living in the U.S., that comes down to this:

  • If the card is for amazon.com, you use it like any other purchase on the site.
  • If the card is for another country’s Amazon store, it won’t work on amazon.com. To use it you’d have to shop on that country’s site and pay international shipping and, sometimes, import duties. What looked like a reward can get expensive.
  • If you only see cards for another country when you cash out, you’re better off choosing PayPal or a local store, if the panel offers one.

Before you redeem, read the card’s terms: which store and country it’s for, whether it has an expiration date and what you can buy with it. Each card comes with its own, and they vary by country.

When a gift card makes sense

  • You already shop at that store. If you spend there every month on things you’d buy anyway, the card is as good as cash to you.
  • You don’t have PayPal, or moving the money out is a hassle. Moving a PayPal balance to a bank can involve fees or extra steps. A local store’s gift card may be simpler.
  • You want to set that money aside. Some people use surveys to save up for a gift or a treat, and a card helps keep it from being spent on something else.

When PayPal makes more sense

  • You want the money for anything: paying a bill, saving it or moving it to your bank.
  • The cards available are for another country and not for the store you shop at.
  • You don’t know yet what you’ll spend it on. Money in PayPal doesn’t tie you to one store.

Gift card scams: the rule that never fails

Gift cards are one of scammers’ favorite ways to get paid, because once you hand the code to someone, that money is gone for good. So there’s a simple rule:

If anyone asks you to buy a gift card to “activate your account,” “release your balance” or “pay a fee,” it’s a scam. A real survey panel pays you; it never asks you to pay, and certainly not with gift cards.

Other red flags:

  • Someone messages you on WhatsApp or Telegram offering Amazon gift cards for answering “quick surveys.”
  • They ask for the code on a card that was “sent to you by mistake.”
  • They promise high-value cards for a few minutes of work.

We cover more examples in work-from-home scams on WhatsApp and Telegram.

Surveys, gift cards and cashback aren’t the same thing

They sometimes get mixed up: there are apps that hand out gift cards for watching ads or playing games, and cashback sites that return part of a purchase. They’re different models with different risks. If you want to compare them, see paid surveys vs. rewards apps vs. cashback.

The bottom line

  • A gift card isn’t money: it’s credit for one store, and in general you can’t swap it for cash.
  • It’s worth it if you already shop at that store and the card is for your country’s store.
  • If you want the money to be free to use, or the card available is for another country, PayPal is better.
  • Always read the card’s terms before you redeem.
  • No serious panel asks you to buy gift cards to get paid: if that happens, it’s a scam.

On Zona Encuestas you choose when you cash out: PayPal from US$5 or, depending on where you live, Amazon and local store gift cards from the same balance.
